Medium Layers

Classic Relaxed Sporty

The medium layers haircut features hair that is grown out to ear-length or longer, often reaching the nape of the neck in back. Parted in the middle, this cut includes thick fringe and graduated, face-framing layers that are often styled in “wings.”

Start with damp hair. Apply a volumizing mousse from roots to ends. Blow dry using a round brush to create volume and direct the face-framing layers away from the face, creating “wings.” (Use a diffuser if your hair has any natural wave to it.) Apply a small amount of wax or pomade to the ends of the hair to define the layers. Mist with hairspray, if desired.

What to tell your stylist

Love this haircut? Here's what to tell your stylist so you can get this look.

“I'd like to get a medium layers haircut, please. I'm interested in a hairstyle that's longer in the back and shorter in the front, with graduated, face-framing layers added to enhance volume and texture. I’m hoping to style the layers around the ears into wings.”
